Why does the launcher start automatically with the system start?

  • This feature ensures that the game is readily accessible whenever you start your computer. If you prefer not to have this feature, simply right-click the task icon and uncheck the "Run at startup" option.

Why does the launcher run two or more separate processes?

  • This feature is inherent to the Electron framework on which the launcher is built. Electron utilizes Chromium, which is designed around a multi-process architecture, leading to improved performance and stability.

Why does the launcher need to be kept running while the game client is running?

  • The game process operates as a child process to the launcher. This setup allows the launcher to read specific exit codes from the game client, helping to determine if an update is required.

Why is the launcher taking up so much disk space?

  • The launcher includes an entire Chromium binary for rendering purposes, which contributes to its disk space requirements. Nonetheless, the overall size should be around 500MB, including the game binaries.

Do you engage in any background activities that could be considered "shady"?

  • Absolutely not. When not in use, the launcher remains idle. The only background activity might be a periodic automatic update check for both the launcher and the game client.

How can I uninstall the launcher?

  • Uninstalling the Darkrest Online Game Launcher is straightforward. Navigate to your computer's control panel or simply click on the 'uninstall' option within the app itself to remove it.

Known Issues

  • If the launcher doesn't start the client after clicking "Play", please install this package: https://aka.ms/vs/16/release/vc_redist.x86.exe

  • If you're running into errors referencing Kernel32.dll or installation errors, try these steps!

    • Try a clean install by following these steps:

      • Are you having issues with the installer failing and/or shooting out various errors causing the app from installing? Though not intentional, there may be various issues that can cause the installation process to fail. Here are some general troubleshooting techniques that can help get you locked and loaded.

        • Close Darkrest Online in the system tray and make sure all Darkrest Online processes are terminated. (Sometimes stray processes can hide in your system tray or your task manager- double check those!)

          • Delete the 2 following folders:

            • %AppData%/Roaming/Darkrest Online

            • %AppData%/Local/Darkrest

        To find those folders, hit the Start button + R, and enter:

    • %appdata% in the run window and hit enter.

    • Then %localappdata% in the run window and hit enter

    • Then find the "Darkrest Online" folder in both of those windows, and delete it.

      If your OS tells you that the file cannot be deleted because it's still in use. Open up the Task Manager and terminate all instances of Darkrest Online there and in the start up tab.

      • Restart your system.

      • Reinstall our launcher.

    • In some cases, these extra steps may be necessary.

      • Set the Darkrest application (%LocalAppData%/Darkrest Online) to run as Administrator and set Compatibility to Windows 7 or 8 (try both)

        Make sure that all instances of Darkrest Online, including the browser version, are closed out before attempting the steps.
